The story behind Awaaz
I built the voice I once struggled to find.
When I was around four, I was asked a simple question about Tom and Jerry in a school interview. I knew what I wanted to say, but cat came out closer to tat. I was denied admission.
I was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech and didn’t begin speaking until around the age of five. Speech therapy became part of my childhood, and even today a few sounds remain difficult for me. Awaaz brings that experience together with my work in artificial intelligence. The goal is not to replace speech-language therapists. It is to make assessment and guided practice more accessible.

How progress works
Experience Urdu more naturally
Urdu in Awaaz is not a translated afterthought. The whole interface runs right to left in Nastaliq, practice words are everyday Urdu, and instructions are written for Urdu speakers.
We are also open about the limits. The scoring system was originally trained on adult speech, mostly in English, so we only score the Urdu sounds we have been able to test.
- Scored in Urdu today
- شتبگپIn words and short phrases.
- Not scored yet
- قچھAlso some aspirated sounds. The system cannot yet tell these apart reliably.

When a recording can’t be analysed reliably, Awaaz says so instead of guessing.
Therapists bring essential expertise
Awaaz supports professional judgement; it does not replace it.
Progress follows meaningful goals
Goals you choose matter more than any single number.
Recordings deserve protection
Scored recordings are not kept by the scoring service. Saving is your choice.
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about what Awaaz does today.
What is Awaaz?
Awaaz is a speech-practice platform for Urdu and English speakers. It offers a guided Speech Check, practice activities matched to your goals, and a private record of your progress.
Who can use it?
Children (with a parent or caregiver), teenagers, adults, families and speech-language therapists. Each person can have their own profile on a shared device.
Does Awaaz diagnose speech disorders?
No. Awaaz describes patterns it detected in a few recordings and suggests practice. Only a qualified professional can assess or diagnose a speech or language difficulty.
How does the speech check work?
You say a short set of words, one at a time. Each recording is compared with the target word sound by sound. Your profile shows what Awaaz could observe, what it couldn’t, and why.
Do I need a therapist to use Awaaz?
No. You can practise on your own. If you have concerns about your own or your child’s speech, a speech-language therapist is the right person to talk to, and Awaaz can help you share your practice history with them.
Can a parent help a child practise?
Yes. Parents can set up a profile for their child, practise together, and read guides on encouraging without pressure. Younger children can use the playful jungle mode.
Can I use Awaaz in Urdu?
Yes. The whole interface is available in Urdu. Scoring in Urdu currently covers a limited set of sounds, listed on our science page.
What happens to my voice recordings?
Each recording is sent over an encrypted connection to the Awaaz scoring service, analysed, and not kept there. On your device, a recording is saved only if you choose to save it.
Can I delete my recordings?
Yes. You can delete any saved recording, or all of them at once, from My Voice Recordings or from Privacy in your profile. Saved recordings are also removed automatically after the period you choose.
Does Awaaz work without a strong internet connection?
Once you have opened it, Awaaz keeps working on a weak connection and your history stays on your device. Scoring a recording needs a connection, and Awaaz tells you before you record if it can’t reach the scoring service.
How much does it cost?
Awaaz currently has no paid features and never asks for payment details.
How can a therapist collaborate with a user?
A therapist can create a practice plan link and share it with a client, who decides whether to add it. Clients can export a report of the practice they choose to share. There are no shared accounts yet.
Your journey starts with one small step.
